I have never written poetry in a classroom although I did study a
couple of poetry techniques, styles and forms. At the time I
was doing these courses (in high school and university), I did not
understand how to translate rules of poetry into an actual poem.
And I didn’t bother to think about it. I have always been a
Science person so I never paid much attention to this beautiful art
of poetry until around 3 years ago. At that time, I was going
through exceptionally hard time due to certain racist incidents that
I faced. So, in anger I wrote my first poem “Knock Knock”.
Then I experimented jotting down my thoughts about other matters
that concerned me.
Later on, 9/11 happened and due to its deep and tragic effect on me
I started writing poetry with even greater passion. The aftermath of
9/11 matured me even further. Eventually, I made my own blog (Cercatore’s
Congeries) and decided to publish my first book.
Personally, I believe that I have matured tremendously since I wrote
my first poem, given that I learn and experiment with different
forms of poetry without any instructions from a teacher. Initially,
poetry was just an outlet to my frustrations but now it has become a
meditation, a reflection and a spiritual experience. It
reminds me of the beauty within people and myself challenging me to
cherish it. My Poetry will always be a “work in progress”
because ACHIEVING something is just a MIRAGE. One can never TruLY
achieve something, one can ONLY Experience it from up close.
